Bargain Bin Rom-Com by Leena Norms

funny fast-paced

My favourite poems - Saturday at a National Trust and Small Talk

Norms poems are full of texture - unique, flavourful ways of describing often mundane or very typical things but combined with a real dread and anxiety over the modern world. Like fighting with a photocopier before having an existential crisis.

The climate crisis (or other analogous crises) have a big impact on Bargain Bin Rom-Com, and an ongoing theme of this growth/growing older/becoming 'yourself' anthology is the apocalypse. Not in a terrifying dystopian way, more "oh by the way, none of this actually matters because we're floating on a rock in space'. I found this disrupted the flow, the pleasant rhymes, and I suppose that was the intention - but it felt odd. Like a weir in a river. I wasn't a big fan of the changes of tone, but it was overall a fun and bright anthology with sweet illustrations by the author.
