A Year of Marvellous Ways by Sarah Winman

4.0

I’ve been on a mission to reread a few books before I get stuck into new books I ordered recently... And A Year of Marvellous Ways is next on my list. I first read this in 2016, so five years ago, wow...

My thoughts have entirely changed on this book as I feel I understand the messages and plot more. Marvellous Ways is presented as an 89 year old lady who has a mother as a mermaid and a father who lived in the local village and fell in love with her. She’s also appearing as that wise old lady who sees things, and has seen things. She’s seen as the strange and mysterious village woman that no ones seen in years.

Marvellous’ story revolves around the people she’s loved in her life. Francis Drake comes to her from fighting in the Second World War, and heartbreak when the woman he returns to seemingly takes her own life... Marvellous takes him in and tells him her life story and and about the people she’s loved.

This story is, from what I’ve taken from it, is about finding that safe sanctuary with someone in your heart and also that physical safe sanctuary where you can live the rest of you life. As happy endings come for all with Marvellous, Drake and Peace (who we meet towards the end of the book)

The reason why I wasn’t sure of this book the first time around was because it’s a bit all over the place, and not really plot driven. Second time around, I enjoyed the pace and style of the book, and you’ll be happy to know I’ll be returning it to my shelf and not putting it in my charity bag haha...
