The Diviners by Rick Moody

3.0

I had a hard time getting into this book, mainly because parts of it were just gross. I can handle gruesomeness most of the time, but reading about an elderly alcoholic's colitis was a bridge too far. It was also hard to care about the generally unsympathetic characters or get overly drawn into their world. By the end of the book, though, I did care about at least a few people (Tyrone, for example) and I was pleasantly surprised by the relatively optimistic ending (assuming you skip the epilogue.) Rick Moody said in an interview that this was a light book for him, but I suspect I might enjoy one of his serious books more. His writing was masterful and I liked his style for the most part--if I see another book by this author I'll give it a shot.
