Unfortunately, this volume was not as good as the first. Character's motives made less sense to me. There were a few pages where I had to go back because I was sure I had accidentally skipped something, but it was just a bad transitional scene.
Jonesy is...kind of dick through chapter one and chapter two. The only reason she ends up leaving Stuff (ultimate crush through V1) is because he wanted her to embarrass herself by wearing the tomato costume for his space opera. she doesn't really have a moment where she's like "I've been neglecting my friends, I love them so much" it's more of a "this isn't the fantasy I thought this would be". She doesn't follow her grandma's advice. She apologizes to her friends at the end, but, idk. I'd be more mad. I think there's also hints from this book and last that Farid likes her. However, they never spend any time together, so I'm unsure how / if / why that relationship would develop.
Jonesy also declares she has a new crush on a all-girl band that she and Susan see at the end of chapter two. However, this band is literally never mentioned again. So much of Jonesy's story up until this point has been about her being a fan and making zines about Stuff. I thought this band would replace this part of her. Instead...nothing.
Chapter three...Jonesy is really mad about her mom that left when her parents got divorced. She has a lot of resentment. Eventually they have a heart to heart. It's nice! Unfortunately usually when one parent disappears from a kid's life post-divorce, the ending is rarely as happy.
Chapter four is all about Susan!! I really liked this as a stand alone. I would read a separate series on Susan.
We also get a lot of reinforcement from 3/4 that Jonesy's friends do NOT like her using her powers, and think they always end in disaster. They're correct! We end this chapter / volume with another cliffhanger - it seems like there's another kid who has the same powers as Jonesy?? And is going to make her fall in love with him??? we'll see how this turns out.
