Lie Like a Magpie by Lily Anna

5.0

Gosh, what a ride! The intrigue starts on the first page, and I for one couldn't stop reading! I wanted to find out more, more, more! Jumping from the present to the past and back again adds to the intrigue and lets us unravel the mystery at a delicious pace. It made me keep reading and reading! I read the whole thing in three days. On day 2, I read over 200 pages!
The descriptions are beautiful and thoughtful, and the topics raised really resonated (even though I have a much more normal life than Maggie's!).
I also felt there was something really melancholy about Maggie's loneliness even though it's never expressed in so many words. It's all hidden underneath, and that makes it so powerful. You feel the absence of a real, true friend almost like a character in and of itself, and it was fantastic.
Also, can I just say THAT ENDING...
Lie Like a Magpie was a raw and emotional debut, and I can't wait to see what Lily Anna writes next!
(PS. I think I need to stop saying that I don't like mystery/thriller books because this is clearly not the case!)
