The Incorrigible Optimists Club by Jean-Michel Guenassia

5.0

Totally engrossing - I've been immersed in this book for days.

The story of Michel and his friends in the Incorrigible Optimists Club is drenched in Parisian cafe culture - the novelistic equivalent of a long rambling evening with many detours, digressions and debates fuelled by red wine and Gauloises.

Philosophy, table football, communism, photography and the Algerian war all play their part as we learn about Michel and his family, and how the Eastern Bloc emigres that make up the Incorrigible Optimists Club came to be here in this cafe.
