Designing Your Life: Build a Life that Works for You by Bill Burnett, Dave Evans

5.0

First started reading this book over a year ago, finally finished it. Probably could have completed it sooner but there was a lot of introspection from this read.

Prior to reading this book, I was definitely 100% all-in on my work and health with little regard for much else. Reflecting on the past year, I have definitely found a healthier balance between my work, health, play & love life. This book does a great job on helping you identify what balance might work for you between these areas, and how to allocate time for planning the next step.

It points out key ideas that I feel were missing in my formative years, for example, it throws away the idea that one should have a passion from a young age and follow it through to adulthood as a career. Instead, it reframes this idea and states that there are multiple paths that one can take and passion develops over time through being curious, trying stuff, having a bias to action, having awareness & asking for help when needed.

It takes many more ideas and reframes them in a manner that makes more sense (even the dreaded term "networking") and does this through a people-centric lens. It even delves into how to build a people-centric community which can be beneficial for those who do not belong to any or those who wish to build one.

Other interesting things include:

* Difference between counsel and advice.
* Value of mentors

Recommended to me by a mentor at the top of her field in Silicon Valley.
