Tomb of Sand by Geetanjali Shree

5.0

A great work. The translation is complex and poetic, and I believe it captures the authors intention. Knowing a little modern Welsh, I understand the playful polyphonous dance woven here between Hindi and English. It is demanding reading and I just let the language flow, and resisted my usual urge to research every unrecognised word, or person, or historic event. Sometimes the narrative led, sometimes the sound of language led, sometimes fancy led. It shifted constantly like the sand of the title. The story and it’s characters was moving and amusing, painful and, in some ways, unresolvable. But that’s alright.
