The Cabin in the Woods: The Official Visual Companion by Drew Goddard, Joss Whedon

4.0

I love making-of books, behind-the-scenes looks, and all that sort of thing; craft fascinates me. The Cabin in the Woods is one of my favorite horror movies of recent years, and I'd heard that this book provided just the kind of supplemental material I like. It does. It includes a good still of the betting board, for instance, and some really good looks at and commentary on the design of various of the unleashed monsters. It's got the script, which is nice for checking particular turns of phrase, and short but entertaining anecdotes from the lead actors. And it's got photos and photos and photos, providing the chance to study the film's great visual elements in a more leisurely way.

There's certainly no point in bothering with any of this if you don't like the movie (or just don't care), and there are no stirring revelations here. But it's fun, with very much the vibe of chatting with the people involved as they get some lunch.
