Ellie is a middle school version of Regina George. She has the school wrapped around her finger and rules through fear. Currently, she is the head of the winter dance committee and is bossing her way through the event. When she gets into an accident, she goes through a truly Dickensian journey. Ellie is forced to face her parent's ugly divorce, the breakup of her best friendship, and the potential future she has this Christmas and into high school.

Ellie's character arc felt believable. When reflecting back on past events, she can more objectively see what is going on. It also delves into the jerkiness of her dad. She is desperate for his approval, most of the time to the point of lashing out against her mother. I had fun with this book and think middle grade readers will also enjoy it. This novel was a Christmas book, without even looking like one, yay for random timing.
