هذه الرواية ذات طابع خفيف ولكنه عميق وسرد حِرَفي. فالقصة تتبع مسافر يبحث عن المعرفة والأرض الفاضلة (اليوتوبيا) ويتوقف من خلالها في بلدان مختلفة أثناء ترحاله.
إن لم تكن قد قرأت كتاباً قط لنجيب محفوظ، فأنا أقترح أن تبدأ بهذا الكتاب. حيث أن أحداث الرواية بالرغم من رمزياتها وإسقاطاتها لم تكن معقدة ولم تتطلب الكثير من التفكير كالكتب الأخرى لنجيب محفوظ مثل حديث الصباح والمساء أو الحرافيش
تختلف كل دار زارها ابن فطومة اختلافًا كبيرًا في الثقافة والأيديولوجيا والتقاليد. وقد أفترض أن الآلهة التي عبدتها الشعوب أو حتى السياسيات المتّبعة في البلدان التي زارها ابن فطومة لم تكن إلا إسقاطات من التاريخ الإسلامي أو الزمن المعاصر. ففي حين أن عبادة إله في بلد ما قد تمثل الدكتاتورية، فعبادة إله آخر في دولة أخرى قد تمثل ديمقراطية مزيفة من خلال ممارساتها لغزو دول أخرى، وخرق المعاهدات الدولية ، والمشاركة في الحروب تحت مسمى الحرية والديموقراطية.
بغض النظر عن محتوى الكتاب الذي تقرأه لنجيب محفوظ، فهو حتماً سيتركك رهن أفكارك العميقة، خاصة أن مؤلفاته مليئة بالرموز.
من وجهة نظري، إن عدم تحويل هذه الرواية إلى مسلسل تلفزيوني أو فيلم سينمائي جعلها كتاب مغمور أقل انتشارًا مقارنة بمؤلفات نجيب محفوظ الأخرى. وهذا ما أشعرني بخيبة الأمل لأنني أعتقد أن هذه الرواية تستحق انتشاراً واسعاً، وكم أتمنى أن أراها تتحول لعمل تلفزيوني لعمق وبساطة أحداثها.
أخيرًا، السبب الوحيد لعدم إعطائي خمس نجوم هو أن المؤلف لم يركز على الإنفعالات الداخلية للشخصية الرئيسية. فكيف لرحالة يكتب عن تفاصيل رحلته ولم يتأثر قليلاً بالأفكار الشاذة التي رآها؟ فقد اكتفى ابن فطومة بسرد ما شهده في كل بلد زاره في كتاباته دون التطرق الواضح لانفعالاته الشخصية. بل تطرق سريعًا جداً للتحولات النفسية للشخصية خصوصاً مع تقدمه في السن وامتداد فترة رحلته وهذا لم يشبع متعتي كقارئة لهذا الكتاب. ولهذا السبب كان تقييمي أقل من ٥ نجوم.
I would rate this book 4.5-4.75 stars.
This book is creatively both light and deep. It follows the journey of a traveler who’s searching for knowledge and the Utopia Land while stopping at different countries during his travels.
If you have not read anything for Naguib Mahfouz and did not know where to start, I would suggest you start with this book. It was not as complicated and did not require a lot of thinking as other books he wrote, such as Morning and Evening Talk or The Harafish
Every country is widely different in culture, ideology, and religious practices. Besides, the Gods people worshipped and political ideologies in the places he visited were symbolisms and projections from Islamic history and the present day. Whereas the worship of a god in one country may represent dictatorship, the worship of another deity in another country may represent a fake and flawed democracy through invading other countries, breaking international treaties, and engaging in wars in the name of democracy and freedom.
No matter what book you read for Naguib Mahfouz, he will leave you thinking a lot about what you read, especially considering his writings are full of symbolism.
In my opinion, the fact that this novel did not become a script for a TV series or a movie made it less well known compared to Naguib Mahfouz's other writings. That is what makes me disappointed because I believe that this novel deserves more attention. And I think it would be a great book to see coming to life on screen!
Finally, the only reason I did not give it five stars is that the author did not focus on the main character's inner feelings. Considering that the main character is a traveler who observed and wrote details about the strange practices he witnessed during his journey, I wonder why he did not elaborate more about his thoughts, how this journey impacted him, and how it changed him. He only described what he saw and experienced throughout his long travels without clearly addressing his emotions and reactions. And this did not satisfy me as a reader of this book.
