My Best Friend’s Exorcism gets a full (almost) five stars for its stupidity, its cheese, its genuine horror, and its heart. I read this book a few years ago (and then twice again after that, I’m a big rereader) and loved it, and I still love it now. There are parts that border on ridiculous, but are ultimately saved by its sheer earnestness and clear love for everything this book was written about. It’s a testament to b-horror, to the 80s, to the power of friendship most of all. It’s probably not going to be for everyone, but it’s fucking amazing for what it is.

(Two minor complaints I had (more so of my reading than the book itself) were 1. I kind of wish I remembered less going in, I had a weirdly complete memory of almost everything and 2. I sort of regret not audiobooking it, I could practically hear the performance in my head as I was reading and I think it would have nice to revisit it.)
