Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys

My overwhelming thought when I read this book was "men are trash" lol. Women really have had it rough, and this book, set in the 1830s really brings that home.
I haven't read Jane Eyre, but as someone who's always been fascinated by the background story of different characters, hearing that Wide Sargasso Sea was about Mrs Rochester was what had put it on my radar years ago. The other day I noticed that it was on my shelf and decided to finally give it a go.
I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it either. I felt like the story wasn't told in the best possible way and for me it got kind of confusing in the second half, however I accept that that could have been intentional on the author's part as Antoinette descended into madness.
I love the setting, Rhys' writing realistically depicts the lush island setting and I could easily envision the Jamaican paradise where Antoinette was raised. It makes me think about visiting my aunt in Portland, Jamaica.
Having read the appendix of my copy which was the introduction to the 1966 edition of the book, I liked learning more about the author and her other works, which generally featured women ahead of their time.
Am I going to read Jane Eyre? Maybe eventually, but it's nowhere near the top of my list right now.
