A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
5.0
A cracking read. A short novel, certainly... about 150 pages worth crammed into 250 by careful use of typeface and margins, but the author makes every word count; there's no filler here. The exchanges between the boy and the monster are funny and engaging and the author leaves us wanting more at the end of each chapter.
This book has been on my list for ages, since I first read the author last year, but I didn't begin reading it until I had seen some of the promotion for the film adaptation. Because of this, I already had a voice for the monster in my head, but this did not detract from my enjoyment of the story.
