A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

4.0

I hadn’t read Great Expectations since middle school. I didn’t understand the language at the time, and didn’t appreciate Dickens’ talent as a story teller. But reading the novel as a college student has been a very different experience. The word I would use to describe this book is uncanny. Many characters, especially Miss Havisham, put human oddness on display. Although much of the story is depressing, I like Dickens’ realism. Adulthood is not what it seems, neither is wealth. Overall, a biting, bittersweet, yet beautiful read.
