Dead of Winter by Kresley Cole
5.0
With the release of the final book coming soon, it was time for a much-needed series re-read and time to give this book a well-deserved review, since I didn’t review books in the past when I initially read this.
I am not okay.
There’s so much that happens in this one. We really get into the depths of the alliances forming, the connections happening, and the true villains of the series. One of which, being the evil twins. First with the captivity of Jack, which becomes a fact at the end of the previous one, and then the captivity of another one of their group.
Also the relationships really take off in this one. The true depths of the love triangle unfold. The first time I read this series, I was completely in on Aric. Now, reading as an adult…I’m 50/50. Maybe future books will change it but for now, I have to say I’m 50/50. Which by the way, does NOT make my heart happy.
Jack isn’t the best for her, I agree, but they have such a genuine connection. Plus his accent - yes please! He might not always do right by her, but he does have the best interests at hand. Opposite though, Aric probably is best for her safety as well as her powers, but he’s quite deceptive too when he needs to be. But I feel for him because of the history he has with her. But then I feel for Jack, because he never asked to lose his girlfriend to someone else. And his love for her, everything he says, *swoon*
Anyone who’s already read the series knows the big wait in the final book is, who will Evie choose. Completely forgot until this reread that she technically did choose at the end, but I won’t say who it was for spoiler reasons. I was very pleased with this choice, and yet, at the same time, I’m not. Can’t she just stay with both?! Also, I was living for Jack and Aric’s moments. At first, the snarky comments to one another, trying to upstage them was just funny, but toward the end, a genuine comadreship came out.
And that ending…I’d forgotten the ending. I’m broken. And I’m going to heal my wounds with more of this emotional series. I’ve only read the rest of the series once, and it was so many years ago so it’s a first reread for me on them versus the rest of these books which I’ve read 3 times at least.
