Flight of the Golden Harpy by Susan Klaus

1.0

It takes a lot for me to give a book a one star review. And sadly, I only made it 16 pages into this book before I had enough. For starters, this book is ALL telling and no showing. The writing style is atrocious...for a big publisher like Tor to have printed this, I am shocked but how poorly edited it was.

Our MC meets the dear harpy on the cover (modeled and inspired by Brad Pitt) and has an interaction with him that lasts no more than 10 minutes. Twelve minutes if we are being generous and yet she obsesses over him for the next ten years and claims to be an expert on the species (while also doing zero research). Going back to the encounter she suffers an injury that the harpy, Shail, tears off a piece of his loin cloth to wrap it. After said 10 years our MC has kept this piece of cloth that she sniffs and puts to her mouth, commenting that it still had his sweet, kitten scent.

His what? I'm sorry...what?

The racial stereotypes were appalling and again I have to ask....how did this make it past editing? Why was it included in the first place?

I couldn't in my right mind continue this book. I skimmed through other reviews of how the MC ends up treating Shail like a pet while also claiming he isn't some sort of animal? The whole thing gave me a bad feeling and after what I had already read, I knew it was the right choice to stop.

I had such high hopes for this book. I never see harpies in fantasy and was thrilled to have scored this. I've never been so disappointed in a book.
