Kitchens of the Great Midwest by J. Ryan Stradal

2.0

After all the reviews calling this book delightful, I was taken aback by how dark it was. Child abandonment, (multiple) parents dying young, alcoholism, opioid addiction, and WAY too much vomiting. Also, the author (a man) wrote about abortion in what felt to me like a very moralizing way, as if women shouldn't have them, or if they do, should be ashamed of it.

That said, I did read the whole thing in two days, so it's certainly an addictive read. Still, in the future I think I'll stick to romance when I'm looking for heartwarming and joyful.
