Jamaica Inn by Daphne du Maurier

5.0

Daphne du Maurier fans won't be surprised to learn how much I enjoyed "Jamaica Inn". Atmospheric and foreboding, the story begins with Mary Yellan coming to Jamaica Inn to live with her aunt, Patience, and her husband, Joss Merlyn. Despite ominous warnings from the coach driver about nefarious goings on in the inn. Mary's misgivings begin almost immediately when she sees her how beaten down her once perky aunt is. Nothing is as she was led to expect. With no other family to fall back on and no way to get outside help, Mary must find out the truth of what is happening in Jamaica Inn, while protecting her aunt and herself.

du Maurier is a master of Gothic suspense. This story is a true classic. An excellent read and highly recommended.
