Loved this! The first chapter was confusing, but after that things started to make sense to me. (There’s also a list of the different societies and what magic they use in the back of the book, which could be helpful before you start/while you’re reading.) There were elements of twists that I guessed, but never the full extent of what was going on. Loved how it all came together, and after about halfway I didn’t want to put it down. I also loved that it’s dark and kind of serious, but then Alex will say something super snarky or there will be some real-world relatable things that made me laugh. I appreciated the moments of levity and reality within this dark magical world!
Graphic: Body horror, Death, Gore, Rape, Violence, Excrement, and Murder
Moderate: Drug use, Physical abuse, and Blood
Minor: Ableism
