I don’t even know where to begin. This book single-handedly ruined my mental health. I had to keep reading because I knew if I stopped, I probably wouldn’t have picked it up again.
The audiobook is phenomenal. It just throws you into this horrific world, which you come to find is almost exactly like the one we live in. I’m sure the physical book does the same thing.
This tells the story of 5 different men, from different backgrounds, who were all brutally sexually assaulted by a woman called Maude. These men deal with the trauma of what happened to them in different ways, such as activism, anger, and above all else, depression.
It talks about the similarities and differences of how people treat male and female survivors of sexual assault, even trans people were included, which I appreciated. For example, there was a panel who constantly belittled the victims’ experiences and question whether or not men can be raped. Leading to an influx of social media posts and articles invading the lives of the survivors to the point ofone of the victims committing suicide.
Despite this being such a difficult read, I think a lot of people who benefit from this, especially those who feel entitled to victims’ stories and lives.
I think most people who have experienced sexual assault can relate to a lot of the feelings of the men in the story. They go through many of the things that women go through when they are victims in the public’s eye. Many people don’t understand what it’s like to experience that and constantly be blamed or questioned by people you don’t even know or some you may know. I can only assume the author is trying to portray that in a way that men can understand.
