Liberation Day: Stories by George Saunders

4.0

And with this book, I’ve now read all of George Saunders’ published fiction collections (I’m sure there are short stories floating around out there that haven’t been compiled into an anthology yet). What an odd, interesting, humorous, and disturbing little journey that was!

Liberation Day is Saunders’ 2022 short story collection. It features nine short stories. All of these are typical Saunders stories (and some even seem like variants of precious stories) but are definitely still worth the read. Stand-outs:

“Liberation Day” - In the near future, the rich enslave storytellers, chain them to a wall, and force them to recite stories to their audience.

“The Mom of Bold Action” - A young boy is pushed into the bushes by a hobo. The parents want to exact revenge.

“Ghoul” - If you’ve read Saunders, you know he’s got a thing for wacky theme parks. In this one, actors in a theme park realize that there is no one controlling them and there will never be any visitors.

“Elliot Spencer” - Another repeated Saunders theme: people are wiped of their memories and abused by others.
