I enjoyed this quirky, romantic, funny classic, however not as much as I adored Pride and Prejudice. I'm yet to read all of Jane Austen's books, but I suspect there'll be no beating P&P.
The centre third of Emma dragged a little for me. There was a lot of dialogue, and exchanges on otherwise mundane details of life - which very much encapsulates the era for those who are historically curious, but which made the book slow for me. The fact that Emma was frequently unlikable was not a huge issue for me, as I knew, inevitably, there would be a redemption arc.
I came to read this after watching the 2020 film adaptation, which I loved, and was sad to see that the scene in which Emma walks to the Martin's farm to convince Robert to re-propose to Harriet, was not in the actual book. I thought this was a very redeeming quality, and I love the film for including it.
