The premise grabbed me but I found some of the plot choices and characteristics to be problematic. I could never cheer on the hero or heroine. They weren’t very likeable and the romance was dull. He was an aggressive ass and she was naive and dumb. I never got over the age difference from when they first met and “fell in love”. The whole plot regarding Roscoe was over the top and made me go “WTF!?!?!” The secondary romance was questionable. I found the Haney characterization to be problematic.

The writing is descriptive and detailed. Perhaps it’s just a sign of the times and my own experience that made this book unrelated and unenjoyable. I can’t relate to the cotton industry and small town plot devices. I ended up skimming the last few chapters. It got too over the top for me. I’m sure I would have enjoyed it when it first came out but most of the plot points were too much for me.
