The Golden City by J. Kathleen Cheney

3.0

I read this book because the back blurb was an interesting premise, and as far as AUs go, it sounded really intriguing. More often than not the AUs I've read have been based in either England or the United States, but this one takes place in Portugal, or, well, half of Portugal.

It was a decent read, easy to keep up with and had a couple interesting main characters. However, where this book fell short is in the secondary characters who were bland and detracted from the story. If there are to be secondary characters they should either fade out of your notice like a good butler, or be sparkling in their own right. These secondary characters did neither of those things, which I found to be disappointing.

The pacing was good for the most part, although some resolutions happened far too quickly and out of nowhere for me. But the ending does leave room for a sequel, which I am looking forward to reading. After all, the two main characters were great and the tension between them is still unresolved.
