Katie Couric shares it all in Going There, beginning with her childhood, through her launch into media superstardom, to her current career. This is a brutally honest recollection of important events in Katie’s life, and gives a glimpse of her struggles to balance work and family, and the many losses of loved ones throughout the years. The book ebbed and flowed between excitement and melancholy, but it all felt genuine and crafted with heart. Before reading, I knew a bit about Couric and watched her on various television news programs – the most memorable was of course The Today Show. She dives deep into her friendship with Matt Lauer, and her eventual shock and confusion with his sexual assault scandal. Couric’s memories of her late husband and parents were truly touching and heartbreaking, and their inclusion made this memoir feel like I was getting to know her personally. The various references to her encounters with celebrities and politicians kept the book interesting, though parts of her CBS years were a bit less exciting. I appreciated Couric’s reflection on how the various television network management treated her and her female colleagues, and how that dynamic changed over time. This was a worthwhile read and a celebrity memoir with substance!
