The Devil Makes Three by Tori Bovalino

4.0

The last book I reviewed was hella negative, so I need to review a book I really liked to add balance back into my life.

I loved this! A low/urban fantasy with a good premise, characters I really liked, and a good amount of "creepy" Dark Academia vibes for a good October read. 4/5 stars, would read again.

The author has this goldilocks Just Right mix of having enough "world building" (for lack of a better term, it takes place in the real world but with elements of magic) and information to adequately establish the magic in the world without overwhelming the book with infodumps or heavy explanations, which could have been too much given the length of the book. Everything just felt pretty well balanced overall.

The only gripe I have with TDMT is that the characters are in high school and it's yet another book where everything would make way more sense if they were just a few years older and in college. Literally change nothing else, just swap the words High School for College and things get just that much more believable. That's a small thing though and really doesn't impact the overall rating.

((on a personal note, it's fun to read books that feel local. Not only did I go to school in the same city this book takes place in, but one of our two main characters lives on the same street I lived on, so I spent a lot of the book being excited about the locations.))
