The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab

5.0

This book had my emotions in a wreck, from Addie's first years of struggle, learning the world and the finding the borders of her deal with the dark. Then seeing her bloom in a real relationship and realize it was in jeapordy. There were times when I wanted to put the book down, so the main character could be suspended in a state of happiness that I was sure was not going to last. But I continued to be pulled back in, I had to know who was going to win this battle of wills.. Addie or the Dark?

Here is story of what most people long for, freedom to be ourselves and still belong. And the consequences of wanting something so much you are willing to make a deal in the dark of night.

Addie, Henry and Luc are flushed out, multi dimensional characters that I was swept up into. The scenes written so I could feel the cold, rain, smoke, music and everything else.

The author did me right. The ending hinted at, but not guessable.. that does not happen often. Satisfying, is not how I would describe most endings, but this is probably the best one I have read in years. It was not a Disney-esc, wrapped up in a tidy bow of happiness, but it lent an authenticity and hope to a story of a life well lived.

Now I need to go so what else V.E. Schwab has written to find out if this was a one off, or if I have found a new favorite author.
