I got the audiobook back when it was free on Audible and decided to give a new-to-me author a try.

Wow, am I glad I did! This is one of the better suspense/thrillers I've read in a very long time.

It begins in Ireland in 1993. Cormac Reilly, 20 and fresh out of police training, is called to a home where he finds two badly neglected children with their mother dead upstairs of an apparent overdose.

Fast forward to 2013, and the case returns to haunt now Detective Sargeant Reilly. As he quickly discovers, the institution and people he's devoted his life to may not be as trustworthy as he thought.

This book had a lot to say about police corruption, ineffective legal protection for children, and predation.

My literal only complaint was that when the perpetrator is revealed, why it was that person required too much explanation.
