I can see why this was impressive for its day and also birthed the true crime genre. However, I was somewhat disappointed given its reputation... the first half of this at least felt very slow to me. Personally, once the killers were brought in for questioning I was gripped by the writing, but the back and forth between the investigation and the killers on the run I found difficult to get through. I just think this gets pitched a lot as feeling like a novel, but in my opinion it's journalistic (even though there are obviously issues of embellishment) first and foremost--there are long sections dedicated to letters written and unshared testimony, etc. that make it feel less like fiction and more investigative.
