The Hawkling by Rebecca Zahabi

5.0

I went back and forth trying to decide whether this was a five star or a high four, but ultimately what decided it is how much I want people to read this book. I loved it and want to be able to talk about it with everyone.

As with the first book, this is focused very much on characters and worldbuilding, with plot taking third place (though there are some key events which happen here). I do feel like perhaps the titles of the two books should have been swapped, because this really was Tatters' story and his status as collarbound is centre stage to the book; The Hawkling seems more apt for book one.

At times it was very emotional, I cried at least once and I was surprised by how even things happening to fairly minor characters really impacted me.

My biggest criticism of book one was that it felt like the first half of a longer book, and while that's not the case with book two, I do wish that it was longer. I'm very much looking forward to book three, which I believe is to be the final book, but I'm not at all sure how it will accomplish everything it needs to if the length turns out to be similar to the first two.

Highly recommended - this is a very underrated series that a lot more people need to discover.
