The Cat Who Saved Books by Sōsuke Natsukawa

4.0

Curious, charming and moments of eloquence

An interesting premise, the value of books and the importance of reading, presented in a charming fantasy as a young Japanese schoolboy, grandson of a newly deceased bookshop owner, is persuaded by a talking cat to enter four labyrinths and tackle problems besetting the world of books.

The ideas are interesting, the character of the protagonists are developed, but without real depth, and the situations play out and resolve satisfactorily.

I enjoyed The Cat Who Saved Books, but thought I would have enjoyed it a bit more than I did.
