Several times I have attempted to read “The Cuckoo’s Calling
Several times I have failed to get past the first 40 pages. I believe this had more to do with current mood than it did with my actually engaging in the story. This last time was the absolute charm. Not only did I get past page 40, but thoroughly enjoyed the novel. Cormoran Strike is a complex, but likeable character. He is well fleshed out with some history and backstory. Robin on the other hand is cursory at best. That is not to say you can’t engage with her character, it is only meant that she is secondary in thought. This is clearly a center stage introduction to Cormoran Strike with the cast of supporting actors strategically set in place for future build up. The narrative flowed extremely smoothly, even towards the middle. I knew the outcome befor e reading because I had watched the three hour series based on the book. The book, as most times, is top notch over the series though I liked the series well enough. I am an eternal fan of JK Rowling and her writing style. Once I committed to finally reading the book, it felt like I put on a familiar pair of worn jeans and was immediately reminded why I love to read so much. Solid 5 stars.
