I want to warn anyone who’s had parental abuse that there’s like 3 on page incidents.
One is breaking a hand with a blunt object. It is to train the child to fix herself with magic.
The parent is callous but impersonal. They are never impressed and always correcting her.

There’s the set up and then the main story builds from that one incident.

It is, as everyone says, very atmospheric. Little vignettes following all these people’s lives as they get pulled into the narrative.

We never get too deep and emotional with anyone. You can give them the attention if you want. But it’s not given on page.

The ending may make you wanna reread it from the beginning.

It left me thinking about what happens upstream of our current time and how much of our lives are we giving to things. Literally and figuratively. Also, the need to enlist others to keep it going after us.
