To Sir Phillip, With Love by Julia Quinn

3.0

Read this a few months back. This book was pretty average and could have been more enjoyable if it had a better love interest. Phillip was not a likable character for pretty much most of the book; he complained about his first wife being depressed (how selfish of her!), he complained about not being close with his children (even though that was a problem he could have fixed of his own accord at any time), he complained about Eloise (even though he was the one seeking a new wife) - you get the picture. I don't know what could be less romantic than a man never wanting to interact with you and only marrying you to give his crazy kids a mother. However, once Phillip admitted to himself he liked Eloise the story got marginally better.

If this novel just focused on Eloise and Phillip's children I would have been happy. I loved the found family trope and Eloise's dynamic with the kids was really fun since she grew up in her own big, wild family and knew how to handle them. Eloise was more of a parent to the kids in the few weeks she was at the house than Phillip ever was in all the years he was their father. Even Eloise's limited interactions with the Bridgerton family were more entertaining than Eloise and Phillip together. The book would have functioned better with a found family-driven plot instead of a romance-driven plot.
