It’s a reverse age gap but still balanced; she is 32 and a homebody while he is a 24 tattooed grew-up-early criminal serving time for murder. Through the Lock & Key prison program they start a pen pal relationship that ignites with sassy double-speak bantering, including a flippant wedding proposal. Their relationship reaches a serious note when he is released from jail and is hardbound coming… for his wife.
Octavia’s trademark writing quickly pulls you in for their couple origin story. They fight and grow together like evert other loving couple, with the internal dialogue giving them a realistic should-i-shouldnt-i as they weigh whether to keep fighting for each other or to just let it all go.
I also really enjoy how Octavia gives the women lead depth, independent of how it relates to the male lead. Again, another realistic compelling aspect of her storytelling.
