A great historical fiction that brings light to both the pack-horse library project and the blue skinned people of Kentucky. I wasn't familiar with either until reading this book. I loved the focus on the rural people who didn't have much (trigger warning for starvation and death) along with the racism and prejudice and the working conditions of the miners. I do think some of the storylines got left behind a little. I wish the miners and the union had been wrapped up more satisfactory. I also think the story would have been better, either without the romance aspect or with more development of it throughout the story. Normally, because of those things, I would have dropped my rating, but the main subject of the story, along with the characters the book woman impacted, held up the higher rating. I also loved the stubborn mule.
