Lost in the Never Woods by Aiden Thomas

3.0

I have thoughts, but not thoughts I can articulate right now, so I’ll come back to this. The short of it? I enjoyed it, with some reservations. The plot twist at the end killed me dead, though ☠️

Okay....after reflection, I’ve changed my review to somewhere on the border around a 3. I enjoyed it a lot- sat down and read the book in one go. I liked the perspective on trauma, and the spookiness, and the tension throughout the book. I LOOOOOVED the take on Neverland and Peter’s existence. If there is a sequel, I’d love to see adventures in Neverland based on this take. However, I agree with others that it seems unfinished- especially compared to Cemetery Boys. It felt like it couldn’t really settle on a genre, and not in the way that some books are outside of genres on purpose- more in the way that it felt like segments came from different books. The ending was an absolute shock but it still felt incomplete and kind of unsatisfying, because, I think, the characters weren’t fleshed out enough. I think I would’ve loved it, rather than liked it, if there’d been more character development, and more.....memory, or events, tied to the build-up and climax.

Oh, also? Immortal but vaguely underaged romances are ALWAYS going to be sketch in terms of, well, everything. Peter Pan is immortal, but despite appearances, he is not actually, technically, even thirteen. He is, perpetually, twelve. Wendy is eighteen. That’s weird.
