Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
3.0
I’m still not sure how I feel about this book. I finished it earlier in the month but haven’t been able to sit down and write a review. I sort of liked it and sort of didn’t like it. I definitely have issues with it so let’s leave it at that for now.
Rebecca is the late wife of Maxim and the bain of the new Mrs. de Winter, who Maxim claims has an unusual name, but it is never given in the novel. Most of her issues regarding Rebecca are self-made based on her lack of confidence and the overwhelming presence Rebecca still has at Manderlay the de Winter home. But not all of it is in her mind, Mrs. Danvers the housekeeper makes sure Rebecca's memory is kept alive.
I often wanted to slap the new Mrs de Winter for not taking control of her own home and Mr. de Winter for not making it clear she could make Manderlay hers. One day I might decide if I like the book but for now, I will stay on the undecided side.
