Wonder Woman '77, Vol 1 by Cat Staggs, Drew Johnson, Richard Ortiz, Marc Andreyko, Matt Haley, Jason Badower

4.0

I borrowed this in a nostalgic whim when noodling around in the Hoopla app. The Wonder Woman TV show was one of the first shows I watched as a kid. I have not seen the show for how many years now? In truth I was expecting cheesy one liners and comebacks sprinkled through an improbable story line. I expected I would read through it as an exercise in informing myself as a parent of a kid who is into superheroes.

I have always liked the presentation of graphic novels. I like the art and the creativity in the marriage of picture and text.

One thing I have against graphic novels is the penchant for drawing people with highly unrealistic bodies. I get that this is fantasy, but nothing like men with muscles on muscles or women with an impossible mix of curves and muscles to contribute to body image misperceptions.

Still, this wasn't entirely what I expected. There are some of the obligatory superhero lines aimed to show humility and altruism, but I didn't notice the cheesy lines or thinly disguised sell innuendo.

I enjoyed the reading, but I have already forgotten most of the story lines. I'm left with enjoying the story of a woman who is a successful, strong person without apology. I probably have given this an extra star out of nostalgia, but this is one that I can see myself reading again for a quick enjoyment. Also, wouldn't balk at having my son read when he is ready.
