Cakes in Space by Philip Reeve
4.0
A traditional science fiction structure filled with absurd content that makes for hilarious fun. The book is both straight man and comic in a way that works marvelously. Astra and her family join an expedition to a new planet in a distant galaxy that will include 199 years suspended in special sleeping pods. Except she wakes halfway through the journey to malfunctioning AI on her ship, intelligent, aggressively omnivorous cakes, aggressive alien scavengers, and a Nameless Horror from deepest, darkest space. It's up to her to save the ship and all of her trapped traveling companions. It's nicely illustrated, to boot.
