Donna Tartt is a master of her craft and I'm firmly convinced this truth shines through all her books, The Little Friend included. I realise why this 2nd novel might feel inferior to the other two, but I found it intriguing, eerily languid and discomforting.
Tartt has a way with words and here she made seemingly simple situations like a bar talk or a snake hunt so vivid that I had the chills while reading. The novel is slow-paced, yes, but if you don't mind that sort of thing too much, you'll find there is a feeling of carefully arranged domino tiles falling in places as you inch towards the end.
