The Death of Mrs. Westaway by Ruth Ware

3.0

3 stars is a little generous. I really wanted to like it but the pacing was just really not cutting it. Pacing truly makes or breaks a book, particularly a thriller and this took way too long actually getting into the the mystery. Like, it was probably page 100 by the time the story actually started somewhat moving along. And even then, so much of the writing was Hal just running through scenarios, speculating, and reiterating how guilty she felt.

And truly, it wasn’t until the last 50 or so pages that any action started happening. It was an interesting twist, but I don’t think the slow burn beginning did it any favors and didn’t even lay enough clues for it to be worth it.

Overall, Ruth Ware is such a hit or miss author for me. There have been huge misses (lying game, this one) and then some that I really loved (dark dark wood, turn of the key). So bizarre. I wish she were a little more consistent.
