Full confession- I can't remember the last time I read a historical fiction book. I have been in alllll the romance eras but haven't picked up one of these in a minute. There has not been one that has caught my attention until this one. I was hearing so much about it and wanted to see for myself if it lived up to the hype and OH BOY DID IT! This book was FANTASTIC! I felt connected to the characters, the town. I felt myself angry at the arguments that were happening and truly invested to see what had caused the murder that everyone was talking about. I was also fascinated by Martha's life as a midwife. WOW Am I SOO glad I live in the 21st century? Seriously though reading her journals and thoughts were so cool and color me shocked when I found out this was based on a true story.

Martha Ballard is woken in the middle of the night after a grueling delivery to confirm the death of a man. This man's body was found as the ice was thawing. There are mixed signs on whether he was murdered or he killed himself. The thing is that this man has been surrounded by scandal as he was accused of raping the preacher's wife earlier in the year. The trial has not started yet and now he is dead. Martha confirms he was murdered but is overruled by a young man who went to Harvard. Now Martha has found herself thrown in the middle of both cases. Will the men accused of rape be held accountable? Will the town people believe the accusation? Was the man actually murdered and if so by who? The more she explores the more questions she finds herself asking her and the more things are pointing to someone evil lurking among them.

I can't recommend this one enough. It wasn't necessarily an easy read because of the content but it was again fascinating. I found myself not wanting to put it down! Hope you enjoy it too :)
