Funny Story by Emily Henry

2.0

you don't understand how much i wanted to love this. I tried but bloody hell I wanted to scream and yell. I'll eat my hat if daphne and miles don't end up in couples counselling in 5 years because they just gave struggle love.

they don't have much in common, they didn't do couple things, any time there was an opportunity to watch their relationship go from strangers/roommates to friends or lovers it was like emhen just put them on 2x speed and recapped those moments. sure there were the times they went to the beach but there could have been a lot less daphne dad angst and more romantic relationship building.

when miles first got introduced I was like 'this is him??'. this mf was ALWAYS late, it was so embarrassing and it was for the stupidest reason too. he was late for work, or an arranged hangout or to pick her up. miles, get a freaking watch and set a alarm god. he claimed he loved her but he's constantly late and leaving her waiting. there were parts when miles was joking or Daphne and miles were joking/bantering but it just fell completely flat. I understood the jokes and I get how other people can laugh and find them funny but I was just sat there like ....  😐 and I really tried to enjoy them too but instead I just felt like 'okay cool, ha'

daphne my my. she annoyed me so much. the first 60% was bearable but when her dad came in I genuinely couldn't stand her and it pains me to say that. she was whingeing and whining and the shit with ashleigh, then she got mad when miles did the same thing to her?? I will say that I enjoyed her friendship with ashleigh, I think that was really important for her character but that was about it for my love for her. 😬

I understand how and why people love this book so much, I really do and I think I would recommend it to certain people but it was a hard no for me. I felt disengaged, uninterested, bored, it felt like a chore to read, to enjoy this. I wanted a LOT more depth to their relationship, more about miles past and family, A LOT LESS miscommunication and more of the fake dating element. the whole point was that they were fake dating for their ex's wedding, all we got was a kiss and that was kinda it. could have definitely gone with an alternative plot or even a more prominent plot to advertise the book with. was this a romance book? very loosely. it more about daphne finding out who she is after a bad break up. making her own friends, repairing her relationship with her dad, showing her love for her mother, miles kinda comes into play but not really. and really off topic but I wanted the crocs to be featured a lot more :(

the fucking fudge took me out man. obviously the ending cleared that whole shitshow up a bit but what the heck. the epilogue was cute, ill give the book that. otherwise no which is a shame because I thought this could be the one after not enjoying happy place. funny story just felt a bit boring but I'm really happy for all the people who do love it, it just wasn't for me, for a host of reasons.
