In the Shadow of Blackbirds by Cat Winters

dark mysterious sad medium-paced

5.0

okay, i will be frank, from my poor memory, it is not the most amazing novel in the whole world. but whatever. WHAT FUCKING EVER. i will literally NEVER forget the scene
of the main character interacting with her boyfriend who was now a ghost, who had died in the first world war, and how his fear was described. how he was caught in this purgatory of pure terror for the rest of his existence
. it was so impactful. i literally don't know why. i just never forgot that scene, and i want to read this book again and catalogue that part because i thought about it so much i had a character or two that was inspired by that one scene. man. MAN. man. man. i think that alone also propelled it to a 5 star rating, to be honest.
