The Assassin from Apricot City: Reportage from Turkey by Witold Szabłowski

5.0

A series of revealing vignettes from modern Turkey with disparate voices such as transgender activists in Gezi Park, the family of the man who tried to assassinate John Paul II, and Syrian and Iraqi refugees in Izmir.

The author is a Polish journalist and before I read this book I was unaware of numerous connections between Poland and Turkey. A chapter in this book is devoted to the poet Nazim Hikmet, who was given Polish nationality after being stripped of his Turkish nationality.

Oh, and I also learnt the exact length in miliimetres of an Islamist's moustache.
