Shades of Midnight: A Midnight Breed Novel by Lara Adrian

4.0

Going into this book, I wasn't sure what to expect. I didn't really know much about Kade and where he came from, and why he came to the Order. He and Brock just showed up one day as new recruits. I worried that it would be simply a way to create more books, but I found myself really liking him and this story.

Kade grew up in an Alaskan Darkhaven. So when the word came around that there were some suspicious killings going on in the northern wilderness, he was the obvious choice to head up the mission. He headed back to his home state in the hopes of finding and subduing whatever was causing the brutal killings.

Alex is a bush pilot from Alaska. Actually, she's originally from Florida, but moved to Harmony, Alaska when she was nine with her father after the brutal killings of her mother and younger brother. I really liked her, I thought she was a strong character and I didn't find her annoying at all. She is the first one to spot the first massive murder in the small town and is therefore a threat to the Breed. So Kade must question her about what she knows and wipe her memory of what she thinks she's seen. Until he finds out she's not a mere human, but a Breedmate.

I really liked Kade and Alex's story. I thought both of their back stories and the building of their characters was done fairly well. Sometimes I think the Midnight Breed books lack this building of character and understanding how the person's past made them who they are today. But, in this story, I felt like both Kade and Alex was built up really well and I enjoyed reading about them.

The story of the escaped Ancient and Dragos was also continued in this book and I found myself really intrigued by it. I really like this underlying story, but I also feel like it's coming to an end as well. I think that another threat other than Dragos will have to come soon in order to keep things interesting. But this story was full of mystery, action, and of course, hot love making!

Overall, I loved the story. It was one of my favorites of the series so far and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this action packed page turner.
