Roses by Leila Meacham

4.0

Many people compare this book to Margaret Mitchell's Gone With The Wind, and I'll have to agree that in some instances the plot is a little similar.

Roses is the story of Mary Toliver, the heiress to a large cotton plantation handed down over three generations. As a child Mary feels a strong connection to the land, a dedicated love that initially appears harmless but will later become a hindrance in her own personal affairs.

A young Mary eventually falls head over heels in love with timber magnate Percy Warwick, but when Percy refuses to allow Mary to keep her cotton plantation and urges her to sell, they have a falling out which leaves behind a trail of questions, 'Oh, what could have been?'

Jumping to present day, Mary Toliver is an old, dying woman. The question on everybody's lips, who will inherit the cotton plantation when Mary is gone?

This was a rather long read, a bit slow to get going but hard to put down once the story really got rolling. It's the classic romance; your picture-perfect couple that just can't seem to iron out their differences adding further frustrations along the way.

All in all, a great book if you're seeking a period-style romance set in East Texas, in the same vein as Gone With The Wind.
