Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson
emotional
informative
reflective
medium-paced
5.0
Read this for book club, and I actually think it reads pretty quickly, but I was pacing myself for discussion. I thought Wilkerson did a great job of weaving stories into her argument that race is out caste system in the US.
I thought the parallels between India’s caste system, race in America, and Nazis in Germany were compelling because they brought out the emotion in making you think “we’re not better than that kind of awful behavior.” and in some ways we’re worse.
It was honestly tough to read at times. It really made me reflect on how I’m upholding the caste system at work and in my personal life.
